Summary:
This is a dark themed story driven quest mod for Skyrim. Like a real story, it is split into chapters which will be added one by one as the development moves on.


Warnings (read this before downloading):
Content Warning:
The story of this mod features dark adult themes like slavery, reluctance, blackmail, non-consentual sex, humilation and so on. Its not over the top (at least not yet) stuff, but if this direction is not your cup of tea, don't bother to download it.

Length Warning:
Every minute you play takes several hours to create in a story driven mod. Don't expect this to be another Dawnguard. Right now the very first chapter is finished. Its more like a preview (which also means - don't expect any orgies just yet)

Bug Warning:
There are probably quite a few bugs in the mod, which I hope to find and fix of course. However many bugs are just caused by Skyrim/The Creation Kit itself. When I tested the mod, sometimes some action in a scene just failed for no reason at all and it got stuck. Most times I could compelte the mod without any problems tho - however if you get stuck in a scene or dialog, just reloading and doing it again fixes it most of the times.

  • You need to have a FEMALE PLAYER CHARACTER

Incompabilities:
Custom Skeletons are very likely not going to work / fit with the mods animation. For the XP32 Maximum Skeleton there is a compatibilty mode: Select the Dark Investigation Settings Spell in your Magic Menu and turn on this mode if you are using this skeleton. The vanilla will provide better results however.
- While I tried to avoid messing up any vanilla quests, due to bugs and pathing issues I can't promise that I succeeded in it. Therefore I do recommend to only keep this mod loaded while you play it - it won't do anything after you have the quest done anyway. No edits on your character or anything are done.

Conflicting / Incompatible mods:

  • Ultimate Follower Overhaul

Installation:
1. Download and install all required mods listed above
2. Download this mod and unzip it into your data directory
3. Run the GenerateFNISforUsers.exe which was provided with FNIS and is in your /data/tools directory
4. Play smile.png


Quest:
- The quest is started by the courier. Just go into any city after the mod is loaded.


Trouble Shooting:
My custom PC looks strange / manly / bulky / is missing custom features
Move dip.esp up in the load order

Anray keeps being a follower even when he should have left already / The door guard won't let me in telling me companions are not allowed / Anray won't follow me, telling me to get rid of compainions
Disable any custom follower mods, like UFO, and restart Dark Investigations.

In scenes my PC or other Actors just stand arround like ragdolls when they should be doing something
Makes sure you have FNIS installed properly and ran the user tool as described in the installation notes

A scene stops and doesn't moves on / Strange things happens / Actors are attacking each other
Load the last save outside the cell where the cell where the trouble began (in most cases the last autosave) and try again.

I still can't get it to work / something won't happen / someone won't speak to me / some script won't start
Make sure you use the most current Skyrim Version (>= 1.8).
Remove / disable all not required mods (you can backup your data folder before to easily restore everything back once your are finished). Make sure the /data/scripts folder is empty as scripts from other mods with the same name could break the mod. Then reinstall DI, use a clean save (or create a new character by starting a new game - in no case use a save which you created while DI was already active before) and try again. If that still does not work, feel free to post here in this thread asking for support

Animation Artists
I have to use existing animations for the sex scenes in the mod. While many of them are very well done, most are not perfect for the actual scenes I have in mind. For example, some are "one-piece" animations which don't allow me to set the proper timing, others don't quite fit the action (like looking to consentual when it is not in the scene) and several do not exist at all (groping, undressing, etc). On the off chance that someone with skill in this area comes along and wants to provide an animation tailored for this story, please contact me.

Things to Come


Now that the first chapter is finally finished, I know many of you wonder about things like „Why the fuck is the second chapter still not out? It has been months! I'll never buy a season pass from this publisher again!“. So to quell your ongoing curiosity, I'll indulge you into the next steps Dark Investigations will take. I have explained most of it scattered in different comments already, but here is the exciting summary:

The next version will focus on adding the remaining voices for the last chapter (hopefully esp. Shydra), fix some of the minor bugs and add a few smaller technical features (for example I'll look into optional SOS support, some VR tweaks, etc). While there will be no story progression I do intend to add one (or more, not sure yet) bonus scenes to satisfy your interest in the fate of our beloved actors. As always there is no fixed release date, but I hope it will be ready sometime later this year.

Afterwards the work on chapter two begins. And it will be a lot work: Building a new big location (the slavers base), introducing new characters, probably creating some new animations and of course the usual stuff of writing the story, dialogue and scripts. Which means two things: There will be a lot new stuff to see and I have no clue yet when said stuff will be there to see. It really depends on how much time I'll have (and use) to work on the mod.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves: The next stop is version 0.28.

    I have no clue what's going on behind the scenes, but if it's taking 2 or 3 months to record a page or 2 of dialogue, there might be issues with the voice actors, ya? Would you consider redoing parts if you got volunteers? And do you still need volunteers in general?

      The questions isn't how much time it takes to complete the task itself but how much time there is available to spend on it. For example if voice acting takes 10 hours (just an example, however there is a lot of dialogue and Shydra alone has over 120 new lines for the latest update) it could be done in one day in theory. In praxis people have other stuff to do than sitting one day in a room and spend time recording voices, have other projects to contribute/finish or are just not in the mood to do it.
      The same is true for me obviously. It might take 50 hours to get content X into the mod, which means it could be done in a week if I work full time. But I don't work full time on the mod, so I might only spend 5 hours in a week on it and it takes 2 1/2 months to finish. It all depends, but the progress speed is not only influenced by what is possible but by how much time I want and can devote to a hobby project.

      I'm not sure what you mean by redoing parts. But I'm always looking for volunteers for all kinds of stuff: Voice acting (mainly female voices, but also talented male ones), animation and graphic artists and so on.

      However let's be honest with one thing: The biggest bottle neck for progressing the mod is my time because I want to (and will) write the story, dialogue and so on. So having more volunteers will make this mod better (just look at the Player/Tursam animation which was done by DarkAngel just for this mod) but not necessarily progress faster (well maybe somewhat if I don't have to work on those parts myself)

    Hi Athstai. I just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work making such a great mod.

    Maybe a dumb question but let's say someone were to be able to fund your efforts on this mod. Would money speed up the process or is that a non-factor, things like inspiration or time constraints irrespective of money being more of the issue.

      This has been asked a few times already in different variations (as to why I don't put up a donations page, which you can find the answer to in the previous posts comment). But to answer this specific question: Probably.

      Long answer: As most Skyrim mods Dark Investigation is a hobby project and never had anything else in mind. As such I work in it in my freetime when I feel like it. I have other free time projects which I occasionally work on and of course also "real" work (where the main difference is that I can pay my rent from it but for the most part there are less sex scenes involved ;) ). If someone was eager enough for more of my Skyrim work to throw money at me, I could justify shifting time from real work ™ to this project and of course there would be a motivation factor. So yes, that would probably speed things up quite a bit.

      But to get this clear: I'm not asking for it and I am not deliberately holding anything back for that case. The mod will go on either way, just in the current, more "relaxed" pace.

      you can use patreon and put something as simply as a dollar donation and 1 week early released will still be free to non donators they will only need to wait an extra week and you could use this to support you not only with this mod but with any other project you do

      I haven't looked into it yet, but it depends wether SOS light still allows changing the errect state via script. If yes then it will probably be supported as this functionality is basically the only one missing right now for basic SOS compability.

    It's good to hear that you are looking into supporting SOS. I use it but everyone is flaccid in your scenes and it's very disturbing. All those bandits in that cave standing around my dragonborn completely limp and impotent... it just ain't right. I've switched to the FavoredSoul body (which i don't particularly like) that you have listed as a requirement until something can be done about it.

    Would you be interested in making the part of the quest to get the potion a seperate quest? Available at any time from reading the book onwards? That way we could get it if we take the other path (chasing tursam) and drink it ourselves, or we could already have it when we go to interrogate shydra, so we don't have to run around.

      The bonus scene I'm currently working on doesn't involved Shydra. However if I have time to add another one for the next release, it will probably a Shydra follow up.

      There is no easy way to archieve this because there are countless things which would need to be reset and put back in there starting position. It would also be very prone to new bugs. Using saves is a much better way to replay certain parts. So no, that won't be added.

      viruses arent from loverslab istelf its from the bloody ads use popup blocker to get rid of them loverslab should have a donations thing with a fake info for payment location so people who dont want there banks knowing its for a porn site could have something like kids collage fund on there payment slip

      Not true dude, you dont "have" to keep updating your mod on LL, yes some stupid people will keep giving pressure to update (just as, lets face it some people are here), but for the most part people will just be trying to help. Also I have never got a virus from LL but I do use Add blocker at all times. Anyhow all I know is that Asthai decided to leave LL for his own reasons. Not sure what they are myself, I think LL is a good community (with some exceptions)

    started new game yesterday, but i have a problem about Morbura, she say about Vallenwood, i don't know where it is, if am not wrong somebody do report about sadly don't remember where it is, or how to complete it, quest marker still in her. is this bug?

      Vallenwood is far away (unreachable far). With the path you have choosen, you will not get the potion from Morbura. You can either go back to Anray and tell him you have changed you mind, or you need to start over and this time convince Nodyme that Erach is guilty (and then you still need to figure something out - or read the spoilers in the comments).

      You can. But whats the point of a story mod, if you spoil it by skipping the story through "cheats". It's not a dead end (the other Shydra path is still open) and replaying it the next time offers lots of other branches to discover.

      When he asks you to help with his slaver "resume", just reply with, "I won't be that woman." From there he will offer an alternative that gets you both what you want.

    This is not a sex mod, its actually a quest mod with a thrilling story line. Athstai you should seriously consider a career as a writer, considering the story from dark investigations was totally yours.

      Thanks for the kind words ;) They might be a bit exaggerated as honestly the story itself isn't that unique at this point - I am quite happy with how some of the dialogues and scenes do play out though.

      Also I do consider doing a story focused mod (without sex) for the next Elder Scrolls. Right now the main selling point of my mod is sex - which is totally fine. But I wonder if I can manage to put together a mod which enthralls the player with its story, drama and humor alone. Well in any case it's not going to happen soon, alone for the fact that the next ES will not be released in the next few years(?).

      If the selling point were 'just' sex, then sexlab and what not would suffice, it's the combination of the 'sex' and 'story' that come together (no pun heheh) to make the experience. When it comes to your mod, both the sex and the story would be quite boring without one or the other to complete the whole (y).

      Yes. I definitely agree. It is the sex and the story the make this mod enjoyable. Without the story it would just be sex, mods of which I have plenty, and without the sex, it would just be a story or questline, mods of which I also have plenty. There are not a whole lot of mods with both a storyline and sex, which makes this mod both unique and enjoyable

    Athstai , if you do make a mod , i'd love to have something from you that makes it feel dark sinister , and gives me chills playing it , (for example dark broterhood gave me this) this mod with the sex kinda gives me the same chills , so i'd like to see a mod from you that gives me the chills again without the sex , great work from you , nice voice acting bro keep it up!

      Actually if I do that, it will most likely rather be a drama themed story. Something along the lines of "To the Moon" - not the same story of course, but this kind of atmosphere, maybe with a bit more humor in it on the way. I think these kind of stories are the hardest to tell and the easiest to mess up, but if done right they stick with you. It would be quite a challenge - which is the point of course :)

      But again, it's not happening anytime soon and maybe never at all. For the foreseeable future I'll continue to work on Dark Investigation (however slowly that might be).

    Best mod in any game I have played by far - great story where choices matter, and great scenes. The skyrim game itself should have been this way (w/o the sex ofc)

    hey! Would just like to let you know that I really like how the sex scenes are made. The step by step, such as going down on the floor, then taking clothes off...etc etc, progression. Much better than just having them magically teleport into the thing! Such a thing requires A LOT more work, I know but Quality > Quantity! So I very much suggest that you keep the same style of handling the sex scenes in the future :D

      I doesn't looks like this is going to happen as Aryes seems to be MIA. However darkminix has voiced the roles for Danica (including the sex scene), Morbura and Nodyme and it sounds pretty sweet :) So this will be in the next update for new voices.

    Aryes did a fine job, but I feel like if she's been MIA for like 5 or 6 months she's prolly not gonna come back. If this were a democracy and I had a vote, I would vote to get a new voice actor.

      Its not that simple. Getting a voice actor is hard especially a female voice actor. There are not many who would freely do a sex mod.

      That's a good point. Now that I think about it, even though this mod has like 360,000 views over on Loverslab it doesn't have all the male parts voiced. Most folks would have a difficult time voicing a mod, let alone a sex mod. Plus the population of Loverslab is probably like 10 dudes to 1 female. So, yeah, I guess there isn't much that can be done =(.

    First of all, what is up with all of the nagging about the next update lol? Just read the beginning of this blog? Just a kind suggestion...

    Second of all, this mod is really well made. Voice acting is awesome, animation are awesome, the story is legendary. DI kind of reminds me of "The Stand", "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" or "Basic Instinct", where characters in the story have to do really dark things in order to uncover the truth. Lets just say if Stephen King plays Skyrim and even mods it, he would play the hell out of this mod.

    I have just played Skyrim of The Elder Scrolls series, so I dunno how this story arc fits with the series as a whole. But for Fallout, as I have played a lot, I can say it fits perfectly. It is even reminiscent of the Benny story arc in New Vegas.

    All in all this mod does not break roleplaying as a Dragonborn in a fantasy world like a lot of other mods do. It is just a mod where you can't do the right thing, but you have to do the necessary thing in order to save lives.

    Lastly, thanks Athstai for taking the time to give us such a wonderful mod.

    And if you need more voice actors, I would love to contribute. Just don't know where to apply?

      Thanks, I always enjoy to read long reviews of the mod. Even more so if they contain praise ;)

      As for the voice acting, the only major role open (I'm assuming you are female) right now is Ireleth / Olfana, so the house carl who tells the player about the quest and it's progress. Nodyme, Danica and Morbura were rencently voiced by DarkMinix and while I don't know if Ayres will finish Shydra's lines, changing the voice actor mid game isn't a good idea.
      So long story short: If you want to voice Ireleth, that would be sweet. The other option is to wait for the next chapter which will introduce new female characters. But that won't happen very soon to be honest. Oh and you can reach me at athstai@gmail.com

    It seems like, since you have a new enthusiastic voice actress, it would be a good idea to just redo the whole thing with her, no? If the old girl comes back you could just switch it back if you're stuck on her. I doubt most people would mind the switch. I feel like most folks would just like to see where the story goes.

      No. Aryes had done already most of Shydra's role and it's only a small part which is missing. There is no reason to let that work be in vain and she did a good job on it. Plus Cathy is going to do Ireleth so that is another female role which will be completed.

      or better yet if the voice acter doesnt want to do any work yet dont put the female dark elf in the next version that way a new version can be released itll be as if the female dark elf is recovering so wont be in the update until ready that way the mod can progress a little without the main actor being cut out of it

      who knows version 28 might have the player being trained by the dog thats if the guy in the gaurds area was working for them and pretended to kill the other person you didnt chase after that way his reactions to the female dark elf would be a trick to make it look like there not in the same cult the player then gets another note to meet him at the bright path pub the player enters the pub to get knocked out to wake up in a cage or something

      after all he said about frostbite venom which suggested that he was evil to me not to mention the pun about how all females in wormos care was nude and in chains before suggesting hiding behind the barrels

      If you read the intro to the blog, he clearly say that he is unsure whether or not he will have more time working on the mod. And when he does, just some minutes story wise takes like several hours to complete.
      I am not trying to be a cunt, but comments like that just discourages work on the mod. You don't seriously think he has heard those comments like thousands times before?

    I haven't played it yet myself (because PC problems) but from what I've gathered in the description and the comments there are a lot of parellels to your Mod like multiple branches/choices that end in different scenes and people seem to like it. It also doesn't have many requierements.

    People seem to love it so far. You might enjoy it too.

      You mean the Steam workshop? I don't think that it's going to work out too well in the end, although I do believe that its not wrong if authors who invest a lot time into creating mods get paid in some way.

      I really like Patron-like models much more too - it allows those who really want to donate to do so and support a specific mod without creating a too much of friction inside the community. Plus those who cannot or want not pay can still get the content, not creating a market for mod "piracy"

      And of course then there is the fact that Steam takes 75% (!) of the cut. I mean if I want to get shamelessly exploited by a big company I'll get a job as employee ;)

      Without a doubt modders can do whatever they want with their content. Post it, un-post it, butcher it in some horrbile way - everybody should agree to that. On the other hand, modders are not free from people's opinion. If any modder complains that people now hate him becouse he asks for cash for a mod which was previously for free - tough luck, they are in their right.

      And as you mentioned, this is only a low cash grab for Bethesda (since I'm guessing Valve couldn't charge without their permission. I don't know that for a fact though). And that is most dissapointing. The developers might still want to do a good job, but they may be pushed by the greedy management.

      Sorry, I had to write that somewhere.

      The bonus scene. As I mentioned somewhere else before I got kinda stuck when creating the animations for it, which takes nearly as much time as the scene itself. On the other hand, the scene already features a new custom weapon :) However, I'm not working on it right now. Once I continue, you'll notice (mostly by the fact that the next update would be appearing then at some pont)
